Davis, Richard Beale

Richard Beale Davis was born on June 3, 1907, in Accomack, Virginia. He attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where he received his B.A. in 1927. Davis then earned his M.A. (1933) and Ph.D. (1936) at the University of Virginia. He began teaching at several colleges, eventually coming to the University of Tennessee in 1947 where he remained until he retired as Professor Emeritus in 1977. During his career, Davis was the recipient of numerous awards, including honorary degrees from Randolph-Macon College and the College of William and Mary. He passed in March of 1981 in Knoxville.
