"The architecture office AFF first made a name for itself with a tiny project for a cabin in the Ore Mountains in Saxony. Built over a prefabricated GDR hut, it repurposed its wooden walls as formwork for new concrete walls. Top-hung windows, raised with hydraulic jacks, hint at a delight in unconventional solutions. Iron brackets protrude from the wall as ladder rungs; wooden boards, cut from the spruce trees outside, line the floor. A stove heats the uninsulated interior, and there is no running water. The bathroom … is the well outside. This is how AFF makes architecture: rugged but carefully assembled, direct but with traces of past lives. And not without an undercurrent of humour."
