This volume investigates the mechanisms (artworks, treatises, and other forms of cultural patronage) that the Marquises of Villena and their opponents used to operate in the cultural battlefield of the time with the aim of understanding how their conflicting historical memories were constructed and manipulated. Concentrating on the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, the book examines these two aristocrats and demonstrates that political tensions led not only to military conflicts during this period but also to conflicts fought on cultural grounds, through the promotion of artistic, religious, and literary programmes.

Este volumen investiga los mecanismos (obras de arte, tratados y otras formas de mecenazgo cultural) que los marqueses de Villena y sus oponentes utilizaron para operar en el campo de batalla cultural de la época con el objetivo de comprender cómo se construyeron y manipularon sus conflictivas memorias históricas. Centrándose en los últimos años del siglo XV y los primeros del XVI, el libro examina a estos dos aristócratas y demuestra que las tensiones políticas condujeron no sólo a conflictos militares durante este período, sino también a conflictos librados en el terreno cultural, a través de la promoción de programas artísticos, religiosos y literarios.
