This volume is an interdisciplinary examination of the supernatural creatures associated with the domestic sphere in Greece and Rome. It is a vast subject of study, given the diversity of entities and their complexity, characterised by the closeness of supernatural creatures to individuals and their closest radius of action, i.e. the family, the household, the clan and the close-knit community. The fear that this closeness could be detrimental to the earthly world and its inhabitants manifests itself in different ways. In order to better understand ancient man's relationship with familiar spirits, it is necessary to analyse the multiple meanings used to refer to them and their meanings, as well as the public and private ritual contexts, and their presence in epigraphic, archaeological and literary sources. To this end, this book brings together works by international specialists from different fields of study.

Este volumen se propone examinar de forma interdisciplinar a las criaturas sobrenaturales asociadas al ámbito doméstico en Grecia y Roma. Se trata de un objeto de estudio vasto, dada la diversidad de entidades y su complejidad,que se caracteriza por la cercanía de las criaturas sobrenaturales con los individuos y con su radio de actuación más próximo, esto es, la familia, la casa, el clan y la comunidad más estrecha. Por el otro lado, el temor a que dicha proximidad se convierta en algo funesto para el mundo terrenal y sus habitantes se manifiesta de diferentes maneras. Para comprender mejor la relación del hombre antiguo con los espíritus familiares, es preciso analizar las múltiples acepciones utilizadas para referirse a ellos y sus significados, así como los contextos rituales tanto públicos como privados, y su presencia en las fuentes epigráficas, arqueológicas y literarias. Para ello, este libro reúne 16trabajos de especialistas internacionales de diferentes ámbitos de estudio.
