This volume examines the nature, forms, and function of borders in and around this "Norman World", looking at Normandy, the British-Irish Isles, and Southern Italy. Three sections frame the collection. The first concerns physical features, from broad frontier expanses, to rivers and walls that were both literally and metaphorically lines of division. The second shows how borders were established, contested, and negotiated between the papacy and lay rulers and senior churchmen. Finally, the third highlights the utility of conceptual frontiers for both medieval authors and modern historians.

Este volumen examina la naturaleza, las formas y la función de las fronteras en este "mundo normando" y en torno a él, analizando Normandía, las islas británico-irlandesas y el sur de Italia. La colección se divide en tres secciones. La primera se refiere a las características físicas, desde las grandes extensiones fronterizas hasta los ríos y murallas que eran, literal y metafóricamente, líneas de división. La segunda muestra cómo se establecieron, disputaron y negociaron las fronteras entre el papado y los gobernantes laicos y eclesiásticos de alto rango. Por último, el tercero destaca la utilidad de las fronteras conceptuales tanto para los autores medievales como para los historiadores modernos.
