This book presents several theoretical proposals about social and familial – but also political and cultural – change in Spain in the transition from the Ancien Régime to the modern age. The sociocultural reality of the Ancien Régime, based on inequality and privilege, is redefined through kinship and, both horizontal and vertical, social relations. In this way, the transition from the patriarchal to the conjugal family explains continuity and change in the context of new social relations that value individual merit, the accumulation of capital, and the decisive importance of feeling and emotion.

Este libro presenta varias propuestas teóricas sobre el cambio social y familiar -pero también político y cultural- en España en la transición del Antiguo Régimen a la Edad Moderna. La realidad sociocultural del Antiguo Régimen, basada en la desigualdad y el privilegio, se redefine a través del parentesco y de las relaciones sociales horizontales y verticales. De este modo, la transición de la familia patriarcal a la conyugal explica la continuidad y el cambio en el contexto de unas nuevas relaciones sociales que valoran el mérito individual, la acumulación de capital y la importancia decisiva del sentimiento y la emoción.
