This book presents an experimental study using eye-tracking methods and experimental pragmatics to examine the role of the Spanish connective a pesar de ello in the recovery of counter-argumentative and anaphoric relations. The book analyzes the processing patterns triggered by the connective when establishing such relations and how these are affected by the position of the connective, the recovery of conflictive assumptions, and the extension and complexity of the antecedent. The results shed light on the limits of the procedural instruction of a pesar de ello as affected by its level of grammaticalization and explicit anaphoric instruction. Overall, the book contributes to a general characterization of the principles underlying the instructions displayed by discourse markers.

Este libro presenta un estudio experimental que utiliza métodos de seguimiento ocular y pragmática experimental para examinar el papel de la conectiva española a pesar de ello en la recuperación de relaciones contraargumentativas y anafóricas. Se analizan los patrones de procesamiento desencadenados por la conectiva al establecer dichas relaciones y cómo éstos se ven afectados por la posición de la conectiva, la recuperación de supuestos conflictivos y la extensión y complejidad del antecedente. Los resultados arrojan luz sobre los límites de la instrucción procedimental de un pesar de ello en función de su nivel de gramaticalización y de la instrucción anafórica explícita. En conjunto, el libro contribuye a una caracterización general de los principios subyacentes a las instrucciones mostradas por los marcadores del discurso.
