The book investigates and compares the role of artistic and academic refugees from National Socialism acting as "cultural mediators" or "agents of knowledge" between their origin and host societies. By doing so, it locates itself at the intersection of the recently emerging field of the history of knowledge, transnational history, migration, exile, as well as cultural transfer studies. The case studies provided in this volume are of global scope, focusing on routes of escape and migration to Iceland, Italy, the Near East, Portugal and Shanghai, and South-, Central-, and North America. The chapters examine the hybrid ways refugees envisaged, managed, organized, and subsequently mediated their migrations. It focuses on how they dealt with their escape in their art and science. The chapters ask how the emigrants located themselves––did they associate with ethnic, religious, and/or cultural affiliations, specific social classes, or specific parts of society—and how such identifications were portrayed in their knowledge transfer and cultural translations. Building on such possible avenues for research, this volume aims to offer a global analysis of the multifarious processes not only of cultural translation and knowledge transfer affecting culture, sciences, networks, but also everyday life in different areas of the world.

El libro investiga y compara el papel de los refugiados artísticos y académicos del nacionalsocialismo que actúan como "mediadores culturales" o "agentes del conocimiento" entre sus sociedades de origen y de acogida. Al hacerlo, se sitúa en la intersección del campo recientemente emergente de la historia del conocimiento, la historia transnacional, la migración, el exilio, así como los estudios de transferencia cultural. Los estudios de casos presentados en este volumen son de alcance mundial y se centran en las rutas de huida y migración a Islandia, Italia, Oriente Próximo, Portugal y Shangai, y América del Sur, Central y del Norte. Los capítulos examinan las formas híbridas en que los refugiados concibieron, gestionaron, organizaron y posteriormente mediaron en sus migraciones. Se centra en cómo abordaron su huida en su arte y su ciencia. Los capítulos se preguntan cómo se situaban los emigrantes -si se asociaban a afiliaciones étnicas, religiosas y/o culturales, a clases sociales concretas o a partes específicas de la sociedad- y cómo se retrataban esas identificaciones en su transferencia de conocimientos y sus traducciones culturales. Partiendo de esas posibles vías de investigación, este volumen pretende ofrecer un análisis global de los múltiples procesos no sólo de traducción cultural y transferencia de conocimientos que afectan a la cultura, las ciencias, las redes, sino también a la vida cotidiana en distintas zonas del mundo.
