This book investigates the epigraphic habit of the Eastern Mediterranean in antiquity, from the inception of alphabetic writing to the seventh c. CE, aiming to identify whether there was one universal epigraphic culture in this area or a number of discrete epigraphic cultures. Chapters examine epigraphic culture(s) through quantitative analysis of 32,062 inscriptions sampled from ten areas in the Eastern Mediterranean, from the Black Sea coast to Greece, western to central Asia Minor, Phoenicia to Egypt.

Este libro investiga el hábito epigráfico del Mediterráneo oriental en la Antigüedad, desde el inicio de la escritura alfabética hasta el siglo VII d.C., con el objetivo de determinar si hubo una cultura epigráfica universal en esta zona o varias culturas epigráficas diferenciadas. Los capítulos examinan la(s) cultura(s) epigráfica(s) mediante el análisis cuantitativo de 32.062 inscripciones muestreadas en diez zonas del Mediterráneo oriental, desde la costa del Mar Negro hasta Grecia, desde Asia Menor occidental hasta Asia Central, desde Fenicia hasta Egipto.
