This is, in part, a recasting and expansion of the old ‘Byzantium and its neighbours’ theme with, however, a methodological twist away from the resolutely political and toward the cultural and economic. A second thing that Global Byzantium – as a concept – explicitly endorses is comparative methodology. The book needs also to address three further issues: cultural capital, the importance of the local, and the empire’s strategic geographical location.

Se trata, en parte, de una refundición y ampliación del viejo tema de "Bizancio y sus vecinos" con, sin embargo, un giro metodológico que se aleja de lo decididamente político y se acerca a lo cultural y económico. Una segunda cosa que Bizancio Global -como concepto- apoya explícitamente es la metodología comparativa. El libro también debe abordar otras tres cuestiones: el capital cultural, la importancia de lo local y la situación geográfica estratégica del imperio.
