Lucian of Samosata is widely recognized as one of the foremost figures of 2nd-century Greek literature and the broader Second Sophistic movement, despite his distinct individuality among his contemporaries. Unlike many intellectuals of this era, including sophists and writers in general, Lucian has consistently attracted attention from the Middle Ages to the present, passing through the Renaissance and Humanist periods. One recurring issue in the study of his works affecting wider topics such as manuscript tradition, stylistic analysis, and linguistic study is the question of authenticity, that is, whether certain texts attributed to him are genuinely his own or should be deemed spurious. The objective of the nine contributions in this volume is not to solve all the questions related to this subject, but to conduct a detailed examination of some of these works, whether only allegedly or clearly spurious, assessing them on their own merits and at the same time situating them within the broader context of Lucian’s oeuvre and tradition.
