This volume discusses the effects of industrialization on maritime trade, labour and communities in the Mediterranean and Black Sea from the 1850s to the 1920s. The 17 essays are based on new evidence from multiple type of primary sources on the transition from sail to steam navigation, written in a variety of languages, Italian, Spanish, French, Greek, Russian and Ottoman. Questions that arise in the book include the labour conditions, wages, career and retirement of seafarers, the socio-economic and spatial transformations of the maritime communities and the changes in the patterns of operation, ownership and management in the shipping industry with the advent of steam navigation.

Este volumen analiza los efectos de la industrialización en el comercio marítimo, la mano de obra y las comunidades del Mediterráneo y el Mar Negro desde la década de 1850 hasta la de 1920. Los 17 ensayos se basan en nuevas pruebas procedentes de fuentes primarias de múltiples tipos sobre la transición de la navegación a vela a la navegación a vapor, escritas en diversas lenguas, italiano, español, francés, griego, ruso y otomano. Entre las cuestiones que se plantean en el libro figuran las condiciones laborales, los salarios, la carrera profesional y la jubilación de los marinos, las transformaciones socioeconómicas y espaciales de las comunidades marítimas y los cambios en las pautas de explotación, propiedad y gestión en la industria naviera con la llegada de la navegación a vapor.
