Throughout history, people have constantly been driven to search for new horizons, crossing physical, social, and cultural boundaries. Sometimes, these forms of migration result in a painful and traumatizing experience involving rejection and alienation; others, however, they culminate in an enriching process of hybridization and acceptance by the host society. In this sense, there is no better breeding ground for investigating the phenomenon of migration in the arts and culture –especially in the field of theater – than the United States of America. This is a country built by immigrants and the evolution of American theater from its first steps to the present is a crucible of ideas, styles, trends, and even genres and could not be understood any other way. These essays, therefore, explore the numerous ways in which migrations have been, and still are today, an active factor in modeling USA culture and, more specifically, American theater and drama in all their multifarious forms.
