Unusual Elements in Palmyrene Iconography

This volume, which draws on the vast materials gathered under the auspices of the Palmyra Portrait Project directed by Professor Rubina Raja, explores the ‘oddities’ raised by the Palmyrene corpus; it examines one-off scenes or elements, and unusual or unparalleled iconographical choices, and it questions how and why such unusual choices should be interpreted. The chapters gathered here not only focus on these visual ‘hapax legomena’ in Palmyra, but also explore the city’s connections with the art of Roman centres to the west, as well as the nearby Hellenistic city states, regional centres of production, and Parthian and Persian sites to the east. Through this approach, the authors engage with the visual richness and sheer amount of choice that existed in Palmyrene funerary art, while also providing unique insights into the knowledge culture that existed within Palmyrene society.

Este volumen, que se basa en los vastos materiales reunidos bajo los auspicios del Proyecto Retrato de Palmira dirigido por la profesora Rubina Raja, explora las "rarezas" que plantea el corpus palmirense; examina escenas o elementos únicos, y elecciones iconográficas inusuales o sin parangón, y se pregunta cómo y por qué deben interpretarse esas elecciones inusuales. Los capítulos aquí reunidos no sólo se centran en estos "hapax legomena" visuales de Palmira, sino que también exploran las conexiones de la ciudad con el arte de los centros romanos situados al oeste, así como con las cercanas ciudades-estado helenísticas, los centros regionales de producción y los yacimientos partos y persas situados al este. Con este planteamiento, los autores abordan la riqueza visual y la enorme variedad de opciones que existían en el arte funerario palmirio, al tiempo que aportan una visión única de la cultura del conocimiento que existía en la sociedad palmiria.
