While the funerary portraiture of Palmyra is rightly world-renowned, up to now, the corpus of sarcophagi from the ancient city has received relatively little attention as a cohesive group in their own right. This single corpus of material gathered through the Palmyra Portrait Project, is presented in this beautifully illustrated two-volume monograph. Through careful analysis of the portraits, and the costumes and attribute choices that appear in these images, the authors explore how the sarcophagi were used by Palmyrenes to project an image of local pride, while at the same time participating in the visual cultures of the Roman and Parthian Empires between which their city was situated.

Aunque el retrato funerario de Palmira goza con razón de fama mundial, hasta ahora el corpus de sarcófagos de la antigua ciudad ha recibido relativamente poca atención como grupo cohesionado por derecho propio. Este único corpus de material, reunido a través del Proyecto Retrato de Palmira, se presenta en esta monografía en dos volúmenes bellamente ilustrados. Mediante un minucioso análisis de los retratos y de los atuendos y atributos que aparecen en estas imágenes, los autores exploran cómo los palmyrenes utilizaban los sarcófagos para proyectar una imagen de orgullo local, al tiempo que participaban en las culturas visuales de los imperios romano y parto, entre los que se encontraba su ciudad.
