This comparative study explores three key cultural and political spheres – the Latin west, Byzantium and the Islamic world from Central Asia to the Atlantic – roughly from the emergence of Islam to the fall of Constantinople. These spheres drew on a shared pool of late antique Mediterranean culture, philosophy and science, and they had monotheism and historical antecedents in common. Yet where exactly political and spiritual power lay, and how it was exercised, differed.

Este estudio comparativo explora tres esferas culturales y políticas clave -el Occidente latino, Bizancio y el mundo islámico desde Asia Central hasta el Atlántico- aproximadamente desde la aparición del Islam hasta la caída de Constantinopla. Estas esferas se nutrían de un acervo común de cultura, filosofía y ciencia mediterráneas de la Antigüedad tardía, y tenían en común el monoteísmo y los antecedentes históricos. Sin embargo, diferían en cuanto a dónde residía exactamente el poder político y espiritual y cómo se ejercía.
