El Belvedere de Viena personifica los cambios que se han producido a lo largo de tres siglos en el concepto de lo que constituye un museo. Construido originalmente por el príncipe Eugenio de Saboya para aumentar su prestigio como príncipe, bajo María Teresa, el Belvedere Superior se convirtió en uno de los primeros museos públicos del mundo. La idea de presentar el arte austriaco en un contexto internacional, que en 1903 motivó la creación de la Galería Moderna en el Belvedere Inferior, sigue siendo el objetivo clave de esta institución cultural de fama mundial. En este homenaje crítico, autores de renombre exploran cuestiones perdurables que trascienden las distintas épocas, tales como : ¿Qué conceptos de ordenación se ponen de manifiesto en la presentación del arte? ¿Hasta qué punto eran contemporáneas estas presentaciones en un contexto internacional? ¿A qué tipo de público iban dirigidas?
