In seven chapters, the book reconstructs the processes by which National Socialism appropriated aspects of working-class culture and socialist politics and translated class-based identifications into the racialized communitarianism of Volksgemeinschaft (folk community). Arbeitertum (workerdom), the operative term within these processes of appropriation, not only established a discursive framework for integrating proletarian legacies into the cult of the German worker. As a social imaginary, workerdom also modelled the work-related emotions (e.g., joy, pride) essential to the culture of work promoted by the German Labor Front.

En siete capítulos, el libro reconstruye los procesos mediante los cuales el nacionalsocialismo se apropió de aspectos de la cultura obrera y la política socialista y tradujo las identificaciones de clase en el comunitarismo racializado de la Volksgemeinschaft (comunidad popular). Arbeitertum (obrerismo), el término operativo dentro de estos procesos de apropiación, no sólo estableció un marco discursivo para integrar los legados proletarios en el culto al trabajador alemán. Como imaginario social, la obreridad también modeló las emociones relacionadas con el trabajo (por ejemplo, la alegría, el orgullo) esenciales para la cultura del trabajo promovida por el Frente Obrero Alemán.
