The Perception of the Pleiades in Mesopotamian Culture

This is a monograph on the Pleiades, one of the oldest examples of a divine asterism. The Mesopotamian scholars understood it to be seven stars that received great attention in the cuneiform culture. This volume is designed as a case study on the topic of the conceptualisation of celestial bodies in Mesopotamia, and it aims to show how the Pleiades were perceived and thus described in the Sumerian and Akkadian languages. To this end, this monograph analyzes the intertextual relationships within a wide range of cuneiform sources – myths, prayers, and astral science texts – tracing one or more possible traditions in the perception of the Pleiades transmitted over almost two millennia.

Se trata de una monografía sobre las Pléyades, uno de los ejemplos más antiguos de asterismo divino. Los eruditos mesopotámicos lo entendían como siete estrellas que recibieron gran atención en la cultura cuneiforme. Este volumen está concebido como un estudio de caso sobre el tema de la conceptualización de los cuerpos celestes en Mesopotamia, y pretende mostrar cómo se percibían las Pléyades y, por tanto, cómo se describían en las lenguas sumeria y acadia. Para ello, esta monografía analiza las relaciones intertextuales dentro de una amplia gama de fuentes cuneiformes - mitos, oraciones y textos de ciencia astral - rastreando una o varias posibles tradiciones en la percepción de las Pléyades transmitidas a lo largo de casi dos milenios.
