This book assesses the role of relief in the representation of space in Graeco-Roman artistic practice and its study – from Winckelmann to the mid-twentieth century – when Classical art developed as a theoretical discipline. The role of relief in the history of ancient sculpture has long been acknowledged, yet the problems posed by an engagement with the representation of space have not been a subject of specific and sustained inquiry. Neither a conventional history nor a comprehensive historiography, this book traces the study of relief – of its formal character, its artistic purpose, its aesthetic significance, and its historical treatment. The contribution to scholarship is three-fold: (1) By means of a wide array of examples, the book demonstrates that the visual strategies employed to represent space during the Graeco-Roman period were a continuously evolving repertory tied to the refinement of techniques and the transformation of styles that those techniques brought into being. (2) It examines ideas now commonplace, based on scholarship now long-neglected if not completely forgotten. And (3) it reveals how competing interpretations of the representation of space in relief elaborated new approaches to the monuments and their representations.

Este libro evalúa el papel del relieve en la representación del espacio en la práctica artística grecorromana y su estudio -desde Winckelmann hasta mediados del siglo XX-, cuando el arte clásico se desarrolló como disciplina teórica. El papel del relieve en la historia de la escultura antigua se reconoce desde hace mucho tiempo, pero los problemas que plantea el compromiso con la representación del espacio no han sido objeto de una investigación específica y sostenida. Este libro, que no es una historia convencional ni una historiografía exhaustiva, traza el estudio del relieve: su carácter formal, su propósito artístico, su significado estético y su tratamiento histórico. La contribución a la erudición es triple: (1) Por medio de una amplia gama de ejemplos, el libro demuestra que las estrategias visuales empleadas para representar el espacio durante el periodo grecorromano fueron un repertorio en continua evolución ligado al perfeccionamiento de las técnicas y a la transformación de los estilos que esas técnicas trajeron consigo. (2) Examina ideas que hoy en día son corrientes, basadas en una erudición descuidada durante mucho tiempo, cuando no completamente olvidada. Y (3) revela cómo interpretaciones contrapuestas de la representación del espacio en relieve elaboraron nuevos enfoques de los monumentos y sus representaciones.
