The College Saint John the Evangelist of Funchal was founded by royal charter of King Sebastião, from the 20th of August 1569. It arose in a context of religious crisis in Europe, because of the Protestant Reformation. It was the first institution created outside European space and, due to its duties of evangelization and education, was a responsibility of the Society of Jesus. In fact, the College’s Foundation and the settling of the Jesuits in Funchal are related with the Corsair assault of 1566. The French corsairs attacked Madeira for religious matters, but it was also due to the fame of being a rich city. The stealing of religious patrimony and the destruction of the commerce and the winery production were a result of the looting and villainy.
