The Woman and the Dragon in Premodern Art

The motif of the woman and the dragon has been prevalent in Western art since antiquity, yet has hitherto remained understudied, and artworks featuring this motif in Western Mediterranean cultures have been examined primarily in relation to the topos of the male dragon-slayer. This book analyzes artistic images of women and dragons over an extensive period, from Classical Greece and Rome (with forays to Egypt and Mesopotamia) to the early modern period in Western Europe. The unique methodology employed in the study of this motif reveals its sacred core, as well as its relationship to rituals of fertility and oracular knowledge, to the liminal realm between life and death, and to the symbolism of Great Mother goddesses. At the same time, the images explored throughout expose stereotypes and biases against women in unusual positions of power, which were embedded in the motif and persisted in Western European art.

El motivo de la mujer y el dragón ha prevalecido en el arte occidental desde la Antigüedad, pero hasta ahora ha sido poco estudiado, y las obras de arte que presentan este motivo en las culturas mediterráneas occidentales se han examinado principalmente en relación con el topos del hombre que mata dragones. Este libro analiza imágenes artísticas de mujeres y dragones a lo largo de un extenso periodo, desde la Grecia y la Roma clásicas (con incursiones en Egipto y Mesopotamia) hasta los inicios de la Edad Moderna en Europa Occidental. La singular metodología empleada en el estudio de este motivo revela su núcleo sagrado, así como su relación con los rituales de fertilidad y el conocimiento oracular, con el reino liminal entre la vida y la muerte, y con el simbolismo de las diosas Gran Madre. Al mismo tiempo, las imágenes exploradas ponen al descubierto los estereotipos y prejuicios contra las mujeres en posiciones de poder inusuales, que se incrustaron en el motivo y persistieron en el arte europeo occidental.
