This book is the first monograph to explore, on the one hand, how the introduction of new timekeeping technologies (namely, sundials and water clocks) affected the practice, rhetoric, and philosophy of ancient medicine and, on the other hand, how medical timekeeping practices affected engagement with time elsewhere in society. The study seeks, first, to offer a chronological narrative of how timekeeping technologies and medical practices evolved and influenced one another in ancient Greece and Rome, with consideration of relevant Pharaonic Egyptian and Assyro-Babylonian precedents.

Este libro es la primera monografía que explora, por un lado, cómo la introducción de nuevas tecnologías de cronometraje (en concreto, los relojes de sol y de agua) afectó a la práctica, la retórica y la filosofía de la medicina antigua y, por otro, cómo las prácticas de cronometraje médico afectaron al compromiso con el tiempo en otros ámbitos de la sociedad. El estudio pretende, en primer lugar, ofrecer una narración cronológica de cómo evolucionaron y se influyeron mutuamente las tecnologías de cronometraje y las prácticas médicas en la Grecia y la Roma antiguas, teniendo en cuenta los precedentes faraónicos egipcios y asirio-babilónicos.
