The principal aims ofthis book are to provide a comprehensive reconstruction of the urban systems of the Iberian Peninsula during the Early Empire and to explain why these systems looked the way they did. While some chapters focus on settlements that were cities or towns from a juridical point of view, the implications of using a purely functional definition of towns are also explored.

Los principales objetivos de este libro son ofrecer una reconstrucción exhaustiva de los sistemas urbanos de la Península Ibérica durante el Bajo Imperio y explicar por qué estos sistemas tenían el aspecto que tenían. Aunque algunos capítulos se centran en asentamientos que eran ciudades o villas desde un punto de vista jurídico, también se exploran las implicaciones de utilizar una definición puramente funcional de las ciudades.
