This book considers the behaviour of this peculiar wh-element across many different languages, including Ewe, Trevisan, Italian, Basque, German, Dutch, Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Hebrew. In ten original chapters, the authors explore various aspects of why-questions, such as the way why interacts with V2 constructions in Basque, with a subject clitic in Trevisan or how its morpho-syntactic make-up determines its merge position in Ewe, to mention but a few. Furthermore, a clear-cut distinction is established between high and low reason adverbials which are subsequently examined in why-stripping environments in Dutch.

Este libro examina el comportamiento de este peculiar elemento wh en muchas lenguas diferentes, como el ewe, el trevisano, el italiano, el euskera, el alemán, el neerlandés, el cantonés, el mandarín, el inglés y el hebreo. En diez capítulos originales, los autores exploran varios aspectos de las preguntas por qué, como la forma en que por qué interactúa con las construcciones V2 en euskera, con un clítico de sujeto en trevisano o cómo su composición morfosintáctica determina su posición de fusión en ewe, por mencionar sólo algunos. Además, se establece una distinción clara entre adverbiales de alta y baja razón, que posteriormente se examinan en entornos de eliminación de por qué en neerlandés.
