This volume contains twenty-four essays, which, in their subjects and methodology, pay tribute to the scholarship of Walter S. Melion. The contributions are grouped under three categories: “Devotion,” “Art and Image Theory,” and “Vision and Contemplation.” The Devotion section addresses votive practices, theological theory and polemic literature. The Art and Image Theory section focuses on Jesuit image theory, the reflexive dimension of works, and artists’ reflections on the function of images. Finally, the Vision and Contemplation section discusses the ‘early modern eye’ as a tool for thoughtful, prolonged looking to ascertain visual wit, deception, self-assessment and friendship, sacred and profane allegories.

Este volumen contiene veinticuatro ensayos que, por su temática y metodología, rinden homenaje a la erudición de Walter S. Melion. Las contribuciones se agrupan en tres categorías: "Devoción", "Arte y teoría de la imagen" y "Visión y contemplación". La sección Devoción aborda las prácticas votivas, la teoría teológica y la literatura polémica. La sección Arte y teoría de la imagen se centra en la teoría jesuita de la imagen, la dimensión reflexiva de las obras y las reflexiones de los artistas sobre la función de las imágenes. Por último, la sección Visión y contemplación analiza el "ojo moderno temprano" como herramienta de mirada reflexiva y prolongada para averiguar el ingenio visual, el engaño, la autoevaluación y la amistad, las alegorías sagradas y profanas.
